Governor Kasich Vetoes Heartbeat Bill

 In Bill Alerts

Today Ohio Governor John Kasich vetoed the Heartbeat Bill, an action which was disappointing to Pro-Life advocates in the Buckeye State. It was surprising to note that Ohio Right to Life was not supportive of this bill either, even though this bill would have saved thousands of lives each year in Ohio. Ohio Right to Life stated their certainty that the Heartbeat Bill would prove unsustainable in a court battle and Governor Kasich echoed their opinion, which gave him a politically expedient reason to veto the bill.

The Ohio senate and the Ohio house passed this legislation which has been declared to be the strictest abortion law in the nation.  The Heartbeat Bill outlaws abortions once a fetal heartbeat is detected, usually around the sixth week.  We applaud the move of the house and senate and their leadership for paving the way for greater rights for the unborn.

We are disappointed to learn that almost every representative supported by Ohio Right to Life in Franklin County voted against this bill also. This action makes one question the validity of these “Pro-Life” legislators. It should be noted that most of the local Right to Life organizations ardently object to the veto. We rejoice in every human life which is saved from the scalpels and forceps used by unscrupulous doctors profiting from the abortion industry – but we are sadly disappointed that hundreds each year will be saved rather than potentially thousands.
